The Role of WESG during COVID-19

The focus of WESG has been to ensure that members and partners are well placed to both identify and address crime, security and resilience issues related to the pandemic as well as helping to prepare for the initial and subsequent stages of recovery. This work has included:

·         Facilitating a weekly conference call with representatives from WCC (including public health) the MPS and Safer Business Network to raise and review current and emerging issues.

·         Establishing (with the MPS) a fortnightly conference call with senior police officers and WCC representatives to provide a more strategic consideration of key issues.

·         Working with the MPS and WCC to plan, prepare for and address the likely demands in respect of the opening of non-essential retail on 15 June and the hospitality sector on 4 July, this has included:

o   Identifying and capturing WESG member concerns regarding the role of WCC and the MPS

o   The collation of premises information, and;

o   The joint development of specific arrangements to support the operational response including a daily police call and dedicated contact desk

·         Identifying and addressing the operational needs of WESG members (e.g., securing agreement from the MPS to extend the provision of daily overnight crime information to the WESG membership).

·         Representation at and liaison with local and London-wide bodies (e.g., Borough Resilience Forum, Greater London Authority (GLA) Business Impact Group and GLA Economic sub-group) to provide a WESG and wider-business perspective.

·         Maintaining links with key partners (e.g., Resilience First, London Resilience and Safer Business Network) for the benefit of WESG members.

·         Identifying and disseminating examples of good practice and operational approaches at national, London-wide and WESG level to members.

·         Providing support, advice and guidance to individual members to address specific issues or concerns and acting as a conduit to raise and resolve matters with partners.
